Lesson Plans for 8/23-8/27

MONDAY
Personal Dictionary- Word #6 "Reflect"
Writing Journal Entry- "Monday Morning Memory"
Activities:
     5th Grade-  This week I want to focus on proper paragraph structure with the fifth graders.  I want to begin this by introducing "Basic Paragraph Practice"  This is a sheet that has 6 boxes: one for a topic sentence, 3 for body details, 1 for a conclusion sentence, and a large box to put all these sentences together in paragraph form.  Today's topic will be "What do you do in the morning before school?"  I will be going over this step-by-step.  Each assignment we complete I will be focusing in on how to improve each part.  For this assignment I will be focusing on topic and conclusion sentences.
     6th Grade-  The sixth graders will be bringing in their items for the "Favorite Things" list that we made from last week.  They will then be answering a battery of questions that I have created about their items.  Once a majority of students have finished I will allow them to present their items to the class explaining their answers.

Activities:
     5th Grade- Today the fifth graders will finish up any work from yesterday.  We will then have a short discussion on topic and conclusion sentences, and begin another "Basic Paragraph Practice" assignment.  Today's topic is "What chores are you responsible for at home." There may not be enough time today, so anything not completed will be taken home for homework.
     6th Grade-  Today students will be using their answers that were given yesterday and making them into a paragraph.  I will be walking around facilitating mini-writing conferences about their paragraphs.

     5th Grade-  I want to discuss yesterday's classwork/homework assignment.  I want to share a couple in front of the class and talk about the positive and negative points of each.  Students will then complete another "Basic Paragraph Practice" assignment.  Today's topic is "What are your favorite desserts?"
     6th Grade-  The sixth graders today will be finishing up paragraphs from yesterday.  Some will be receiving paragraphs back today that have been edited by me.  These students will be asked to rewrite for final copies while adding or changing things in their paragraphs.

5th Grade-  Having 3 "Basic Paragraph Practice" assignments this week may prove to be a lot considering I want to discuss good topic and conclusion sentences, while sharing to talk about positives and negatives.  I will use to day to review a lot of the discussion.  Any extra time will be used for grammar enrichment activities. 
6th Grade-  Today is when final drafts for the "Favorite Item" paragraph is due.  I am guessing that we will need today for extra work time.  Any extra time will be used for a grammar enrichment assignment on verbs.

     5th Grade- The fifth graders will be finishing their "Getting to Know You" paragraphs from last week.  Because it's only the 2nd week of school, more time has to be given to complete the three tasks for today.
     6th Grade- The sixth graders will also be finishing up final drafts for their "Getting To Know You" paragrpahs.  They will then take notes on writing "Friendly Letters".

Activities:
     5th Grade- The fifth graders should have wrapped up the "Getting To Know You" assignment.  If not some students will be doing so today.  The only other task for today is to take notes about writing "Friendly Letters". 

     6th Grade- The sixth graders will be writing their friendly letters today.  They will pick someone to write to, align the 5 appropriate parts correctly, and include 7 sentences in the body.  I will be walking around the class as they write facilitating mini-writing conferences.

     5th Grade-  The fifth graders will be receiving their letters back today that I have edited.    They will be rewriting for a final copy. As they are looking over papers I will be talking with students about the markings I made and discussing what they mean.
      6th Grade- The students that were unable to finish their Friendly Letter final drafts will complete them today.  The main task for today is to take notes on writing "Business Letters".  If we have time today we will be constructing another list of favorite things.  I am hoping to complete this task in a full class period tomorrow though.

Writing Journal Entry- "Reflect upon your week in each class. One postive and one negative"
Activities:
     5th Grade-  Today's class will consist of me going over "Middle School Rules and Procedures" again.  There have been many issues maybe due to the transition to the middle school, so I want to take a day and reinforece these things.  Room 201 has also not taken the "Area 3- On-Demand" writing assessment, so this will be completed today as well.
     6th Grade-  Today I want to compile 2 lists: favorite things (objects, toys, clothes, games, etc..) and favoite restaurants, foods, candy, drinks, etc..  I want to let students work in teams of 2 or 3.  After 10 minutes of brainstorming or so, I want to have students pick 1 thing, their most favorite, and their homework is to bring it into class on Monday.

Once they have written out the steps in bullet form with transitions they will construct these bullets into paragraph form. Students will then have a writing conference with me discussing corrections and suggestions to their paragraphs. I will also be walking around facilitating the writing process.
